Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
